Silence is golden but… communicate, damn it!

As I settled into the plush leather armchair in the executive lounge of the Sheraton in Dubai, I couldn’t help but notice the peculiar scene unfolding around me. Despite the elegant surroundings and the serene ambiance, not a single person seemed engaged in conversation. Instead, each guest was engrossed in the glowing screens of their smartphones, tapping away with focused intensity.

I observed the scene with a mixture of fascination and unease. In every direction, heads were bowed, fingers flying across touchscreens, and lips moving silently as if engaged in some silent incantation. It was as if the lounge had been transformed into a sanctuary of solitary communion with technology.

As I sipped my Sauvignon Blanc , I couldn’t shake the feeling of disconnect in the air. Here we were, surrounded by fellow travelers in one of the most luxurious settings imaginable, yet the sense of camaraderie and human connection was conspicuously absent. It was as though we had all retreated into our own digital bubbles, cocooned from the outside world by the glow of our devices.

I glanced around, hoping to catch someone’s eye and share a knowing smile or nod of acknowledgment, but my efforts were met with indifference. It was as if we had all become islands unto ourselves, adrift in a sea of virtual connectivity but utterly alone in our solitude.

As the minutes stretched into hours, I couldn’t shake the feeling of melancholy that settled over me like a shroud. This, I realized, was the new normal of communication — a world where human interaction had been replaced by the cold glow of screens and the sterile efficiency of text messages and emails.

But amidst the sea of smartphones and tablets, a glimmer of hope emerged. In a corner of the lounge, two strangers exchanged a hesitant smile before striking up a conversation. Their laughter rang out like a beacon of light in the darkness, cutting through the digital fog that had enveloped us all.

Inspired by their example, I made a conscious decision to set aside my phone and engage with the world around me. And as I did, I discovered that the true magic of communication lies not in the cold confines of technology, but in the warmth of human connection — a lesson I vowed never to forget.
